Seems grand. Mrs Ron had one built up in Campagnolo Veloce with Khamsin wheels last year and she's very happy with it.

If you can get the same frame with a totally 105 groupset for that price it sounds like a bargain. Is that because it is "off the peg" so to speak or are the individual component parts your choices from the bike builder?

Although i live near Ribble you could also consider:- http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/b/q/CBP ... nko_bianco

SRAM Rival with the choice to upgrade some bits and pieces to Force or Red?

I sometimes ride with a chap who has one with Campag Veloce and I have to say I was impressed with it in the flesh. Judging by the way he dances up hills and speeds along on the flatter sections I would say it appears a capable machine, especially considering the low price.

I'd rather stick with shimno because I'm comfortAle maintaining it.

Any advice on a wheel upgrade?

    Cheers

Indeed, I prefer Shimano too. I was not suggesting you did not get the Groupset of your choice, simply offering an opinion on what I had experience of.

Have had one for the last 20months, with sram rival, great bike for the money. The paint finish isn't as high as the more expensive brands, also frame is very comfortable but I was inbetween sizes myself. Quite a bit if flex around the bb and rear triangle. But all in all very happy and would recommend!

ditch the 105 group set and go for the better and cheaper Campag Veloce
The money you save put towards the wheels Campagnolo Khamsin (these are great VFM)
The tyres are rubbish and will need replacing. if you want to keep the"special edition bike", then upgrade to the conti Ultra sport.

Note: I had the same decision as you on my gran fondo. and decided on the above after much research

I pushed your cost envelope a bit (see below) - but a lot of that was from the saddle upgrade to the Arione which is a personal fave.

If it was me I'd go for one more wheel upgrade to the Mavic Ksyrium Equipe S Clinchers..... bringing the total to £1,480.

It's a dangerous site that, by the time I'd finished with mine I was up at £2.7k

To add to your options.... I went for the New Sportive Racing (I think its a tad lighter/stiffer than the gran fondo)

I suspect the GF is stiffer than the New Sportive - that's where part of the weight penalty comes in; chunkier carbon.

The more significant difference is that the GF is different geometry; a bit shorter and taller.
    Faster than a tent.......

    I'm 6ft 1 and 100kg

Would the gran fondo be more suitable.. I intend to use it for sportives and a wee bit of club racing

I had a similar dilemma on Bianco vs. Gran Fondo.
Originally I had planned on the Bianco, then a friend showed me a GF. GF looked amazing.
I called Ribble, and they advised that in practice there is little difference between the two.
For me, I find the GF frame more "sculpture" and curved.
I've seen both bikes in the flesh, and now find the Bianco paint/decals to be bland.

So it is do to taste.

Whatever you do, please call Ribble with your measurements. They will guide you on the right frame size, stem length etc.

I'm 5'11" with a 33" ISL (using the ribble book between the legs method.) They advised large frame, 110mm stem and 172.5 crank. Personnally I liked the compact groupset. Gives you lots of gear options with little gear overlap.

This is good for selecting gears.

using the "special bikes builder" gave a good VFM bike.
