KMC quick link broken

Thought I'd give the bike a quick once-over ahead of my first sportive on Sunday. Whipped the chain off and dunked it in white spirit, and when I fished it out after 2 rinses I found that one half of the KMC link had lost it's pin. I suspect it was already broken; I had a moment on Friday's ride when the rear mech seemed to jam, but the drivetrain was so filthy I couldn't see what was amiss. Luckily I completed my ride without it breaking

Probably my fault for using a used link on a new chain. Logically new chain should mean a new link. Perhaps I'll switch to KMC chains; Shimano chain plus new KMC link each time seems an expensive option, especially since the Shimano chains don't seem to last very well in the winter...

Many people report KMC chains work better with Shimano than Shimano chains - YMMV. Certainly no worse. And yes, your quick link will wear out at least as quickly as the chain, perhaps a little quicker if it's opened and closed more frequently, so remember to replace them every now and then!
