Hi,
Looking at the specs for the new Specialized Tarmac SL4, is the price jump from £3000 for the standard Ultegra to £4000 for Ultegra Di2 good value or go for the £3000 bike and upgrade later a better choice?

I am currently building up an SL4.with DI2. The reason for going electric was that some people who have used SL4 frames said that the manual changing can be a bit hit and miss on the SL4 due to the internal cabling routing. Having said that others on here have commented that they have had absolutely no problems with it.
Personally I was not a bit fan of manual Ultegra 6700, didn't find it a particularly good groupset, particularly didn't like the shifting and ended up selling mine, went back to 6600 on a winter bike because the STI levers were (in my opinion) better.0 -

I have SL4 Sworks, shifting is absolutely fine (DA).
I think Di2 is still developing / refining itself, so I'm still waiting till it's completely finished! (integrated batteries, etc.)0 -
I'd get the cheaper ultegra bike for £3k and then buy the Ultegra Di2 kit from merlin for £750 (with quidco to get a bigger discount) and fit that to the bike and sell the (manual) ultegra bits as new (sti levers and front and rear mechs).
I bought an S Works SL4 frame and built up the bike with the Di2 kit from merlin, couldn't be happier!0 -
Ive had my first ride on my SWorks SL4 this week, that i had built up. I got Corley cycles to price match Merlin on the group. I had the same choice between DA mechanical or Ultegra di2. I went with the di2 and I love it. after coming from sram double tap it's so quiet and smooth, although sometimes I honestly cant tell ive changed gears (which you might not like). The big downside to me is the weight which adds a lb over DA, but as a 80kg rider its not the be all. Corley cycles put the battery under the BB so you dont really notice it.0
