I've got a 500 and am very happy with it.

But this summer I'm off to France for 2 weeks to watch a bit of Le Tour and I'm also off to Spain for a week on the bike so I'm looking to get an 800 so I can plan some good routes for while I'm away. I'm not bothered about an 810 as the new features don't interest me.

I already have heart rate strap etc so I'm just after an 800 head unit. But what I want to know is which one would be best for me. I get confused with all the different bundles. I'm basically just after the head unit and European maps so I can use it on my jollies.

So what would people advise?

Just get the unit then buy or download Garmin city navigator europe, that should do it.

Just worked it out on Handtec and for just the 800 head unit and European maps it's £300. If I get the performance bundle with European maps then it's only £320. So I might as well get that and then I can sell the heart rate strap and cadence sensor on here.

For an extra 20 quid it's a no brainer.

You seriously do not need to buy the Garmin maps. Open Street Maps etc are just as good. I bought a base 800 and I've downloaded all I'll need for the UK and France. Create your routes via Ride With GPS and you're good to go.

So are there free maps that would give me detailed maps of France and Spain?

    Yes, very detailed.

And there are idiot's guide videos on YouTube that will walk you through installing them - I used them to help me ;-)

60 quid for reliable hassle free maps of the whole of Europe seems fair enough to me.

If they were, but they are not really. You pays your money and you takes your choice, as they say.
