hi does the 800 come with uk maps loaded?

Comments

  • Not all Edge 800's come with mapping. The maps are contained on an SD card and there is a road (all Europe) and offroad (OS 1:50k) options.

Personnally, I would recommend you save your money and just use the free (and some would argue better) Talkytoaster UK maps. They even have a OS1:50 look-a-like version. The only thing really missing is postcodes. but in practice you don't need them.

Get yourself a free account on ridewithgps.com. Then plan your route and download to your garmin 800. Then upload and analyse / review after - perfect.

This guy has excellent guides on setting up the Garmin too

PS if you want UK maps with UK cycle paths clearly shown try these as an alternative to Talktoaster. I have build them as a backup to my default Talkytaoster map.

I am not sure you can get the performance pack without having the Europe maps. The performance pack makes the 800 much more useful and is a must have, in my book.

For the cost and the seamless operation (no downloading to an SD card programmer etc), I wouldn't hesitate at getting the Europe maps package again.

I bought the performance pack without maps. Then used the free maps as above.

Yes, so did I - last week. £301 from Amazon.
    Is the gorilla tired yet?
  • Whatever you do, ditch the Garmin map and go with talky toaster ones anyway. Much better.

    Ok confused :x

I can get a garmin 800 (standard) for £235. I think a 500 will do me really but like the idea of proper maps like a sat nav. I have no idea whats included as standard or what you get in the bundles and dont want to spend more than i have to anyway. So is a standard 800 able to work straight out of the box with basic UK road maps?

Thanks for you help on this BTW
  • The basic one will come with a Garmin basemap I think, which is not much use.

You then buy yourself the correct micro (I think) SD card and download your choice of Talky Toaster map(s) for it.

I have the full pack and have ditched my Garmin City Navigator mapping in favour of the Talky Toaster map as they have most cycle routes on them and City Navigatior doesn't.

You won't regret buying the Garmin 800.
But you will quickly want to have a Heart Rate Monitor and a cadence sensor (you will want these even if you get a garmin 500).
So you need to see if you can get a better deal buying separately or combined in the performance bundle.

But as most people are saying. If you get a garmin 800, buy one which includes the Garmin CityNavigator maps. Free Talktoasters are better (IMHO)

    +1 for the Talkytoaster maps.

My 800 arrived this week and I bought the performance pack including HRM and Cadence and downloaded the OSM maps. Takes about 45 mins to download and add onto Garmin but not tricky at all.

Don't forget to buy a micro SD card as the internal memory is only 100mb.

Desperate to get out and try it but snow here making it un attractive!
