rear derailleur adjustment

On Sunday after a ride that involved whitedown lane I noticed I could not get into bottom gear on the small ring, which to be honest I could have done with on whitedown! Now I adjusted my front sprockets on Saturday as there was a tiny bit of chain rub in the highest 2 gears in the big ring on the front derailleur by loosening the bolt and re positioning the cage so that there was no rub. I now know that I should have checked all my gears, but being daft I didn’t.

Should I just re adjust my rear tolerances (the outer /inner tolerance screws) so that everything meshes or works ok?

  • Adjusting Front Derailieur (FD) should not affect rear gears unless the alingment of the FD has changed and the chain rubs on the FD. If you haven't adjusted, touched, banged, bent etc the RD (or hanger) when you did the FD then it won't be the limit screws.

When you say you can't get in the into bottom gear on the small ring I assume you mean smallest chainring and largest sprocket on cassette - i.e. the lowest gear possible - and that it has worked in the past? Most likley and simple explanation is a bit of cable stretch so the last downshift click on the shifter isn't pulling the Rear Derailieur far enough accross to shift into the largest sprocket. Try adjusting the barrel adjustor a quarter and then a half turn to tighten the cable.

I find that sometimes if the simple doesn't work its actualy best to just disconnect the cable and set up from scratch - more time consuming but it works if the simple obvious solutions don't.

    yes.

Just need to tighten the cable a little. Behind the derailleur there is a big adjustment screw, give it half a turn anticlockwise and see if it works, if it doesn't give it another half a turn and it should go... it's cable stretch, normal
