Hi everyone, my first post. I'm Paul and live in the far west of Cornwall. I'm 32 and looking to get back into cycling for fitness and enjoyment. I initially started running but injured my knee and the docs have all advised cbuying ycling is the way to go.
So my journey of buying a bike started a few weeks back, the last bike i bought was a GT Avalance 2.0 and purely bought it for looks, I soon discovered I should of listened to advise and bought the skinnier tyres less chunky bike (the hybrid). To clarify I'm 190lbs 5'11 and looking to ride on road and trail. I've been looking at secondhand "bargains" mostly and narrowed the search down to a Specilized Sirrus or Trek 7.? . Its only been over the last 24hrs I've opened my eyes to the pitfalls(luckily just hours before I was going to place a bid on a 2nd hand Sirrus).
I've rang the local bike shop and suggested the Trek over the Sirrus (not surprising their a trek agent), although the general opinion from older post on this debate is that both are similar but the trek has slightly superior components??? At this moment in time I have my eyes set on the Trek 7.2 due to the new lightweight frame and nice colour compo (black and red), my local bike shop is selling this bike for £425 for says he can do some sort of deal, I'm expecting this to be more accessories orientated than discount on the bike itself.
What accessories should i be trying to get discounted, lots of things on Amazon seem to be very reasonable so unsure which component/accessories is going to be best to buy in-store rather than online?. I already have a giro helmet and front and rear light.
Finally do you think I'm making the right decisions buying new and is the Trek 7.2 the best bike for my needs? I know I need to ride them first but need a general opinion.
thanks in advance Paul.

Personally for that sort of budget I would be favouring the 2nd hand market, you will get far more bang for your buck.

Lol ! I can't help with your choice as I'm biased as I have no love for Trek what so ever !

    Good luck :D

    Choosing a bike is a killer, Would YOU choose a 2nd hand 2011 Sirrus for under £300 over a New trek 7.2 @ £425?

See my previous post mate,I have never liked Trek bikes, they've never excited me at all (MTB) much like Giant !

And for the money your spending I would pick on what looks the best ! Spec will be average on both for that price point.

So it would be the Spesh for me !

Don't worry though as once the bug bites you will be spending more in no time !

Well I lost out on the Sirrus, went for £260 and would cost £40 in fuel to collect, so £300. In hindsight £300 for a used bike with no guarantee/support might not be the best way for a beginner. I guess the extra £100 pays for reassurance and advice and the beginning of a long relationship with my bike shop. Should i be considering any others in the £400 price bracket?

I would consider the classifieds here as most that get put up for sale have been well looked after.
I personally would still look at 2nd hand for the money you are going to spend.
