Advice Please - Budget of £800 to £1000 For HT

I recently replaced my Specialized Rockhopper Pro with a Boardman MTB Pro, which has had so many faults that it's being returned to Halfords next week and I'm receiving a full refund. I need something reliable, for a similar price, to replace it - any ideas?
Some of my preferences:
- I don't want a 29er.
- I dont want SRAM gears.
- I want something that's available in a 16 or 17 inch frame.
- I dont want remote lock-out on the fork.
Any advice and guidance will be appreciated.
