Which Silver Campagnolo Groupset?

Hello

I've got an old 1995 Superissmo Colnago that I'm going to build up one day soon. It's brand new and never had a groupset on it.

I must have a silver groupset on it to go with the age and look of the bike. The frame is one of the cheaper Colnago's that they made and I will use as a fun good weather bike and sportives etc.

Looking at Campagnolo it would appear that there are not many silver groupsets left. I think my options are Veloce or Athena and thats it. Will an 11 speed fit such an old frame? I don't have wheels yet but will be looking for classic style rather than bling.

I would rather have a groupset that's a few years old and no more than 10 speed but preferably new. Anyone know of options where to buy an older but still new groupset?

Lastly I have friend with Centuar 10 speed group from approx 2002. Thoughts? Assume all modern 10 speed campagnolo parts will interchange with it?

Thanks

You can go down the New Old Stock (NOS) route, but could be pricey.

As for wheels - try the silver H Plus Son Archetype in silver, possibly on Hope Pro 3 hubs. They are stunning.

I am just in the process of doing the same thing. I had my (owned from new) 1985 Mexico Super frame restored to perfection at Bob Jacksons a couple of years ago. Mine is not going retro though, I want to bring it up to date with modern carbon Chorus Group.

If yours is the same as mine, the rear triangle axle width will be 126mm and you need 130. Bob Jackson's said its not a case of just pulling it apart 4mm, the frame needs to be properly relaxed out to 130 which I had done as part of the resto.

    Hope this helps...

I have the silver Centaur groupset on my best bike, it's circa 2001/2 and managed to get a brand new chainset last year from Fatbirds in Hunstanton for £80 53/39 172.5 in my opinion it looks so much nicer than the newer chain sets. You can add newer Campag parts to the older sets but if I were you I would try a get shifters and the chainset in the 2001/2 era and get the mechs and brakes from the newer range as they don't really look much different.

Try and find Campag dealers and call them, they may have bits floating around in a sale box.

11 speed should be fine - 10-speed and 11-speed Campag-compatible hubs are generally the same size so if the frame will take modern 10-speed, it'll take Campag 11-speed too (the Hope Pro 3s apparently don't take 11s though).

You could use rims like those Archetypes - H+Son also do more box-shaped rims too.

Check out Ambrosio Zenith hubs for the old school chromed look.

Athena silver will do thee trick. There will be some 10 speed silver finished stuff for Centaur and Veloce from 2009 and 2010 in the new shape but will be hard to source now.

Just to say that Halfords still have the 172.5mm Silver Compact Veloce Chainset at £65.99. If you add the silver Veloce Brakeset at £36.75 you qualify for a £25 discount, so could get the Chainset and Brakeset for £77.74 delivered.

It were me, on a NOS 1995 Colnago frame, I would to try and get alloy Record or Chorus if you can get hold of various components. Chainset and RD are your best bets to buy NOS, might cost you of course.

I would go 10 speed, you've just got to look around for sourcing. All good fun.

Those H plus Sons in silver via Coriordan look nice too.

Assuming 10 speed fits, so will 11 speed.

    Easy option - Athena

Sticking to 10 Speed if you are prepared to look around you are looking at pre 2000 Record to get alloy levers and chainset or IMHO the best alloy 10 speed is 2009 Centaur (Ultratorque and Ergopower Ultrashift) with old Record alloy derailleurs and brakes.

If you are stuck with 8 or 9 speed then old record is the way to go.

All just a personal opinion though.

Also worth considering Ambrosio Excellight SSC rims, they are available in silver if you shop 'round a bit. Just bagged a pair for my new Master build and should look spot on with Zenith hubs and Athena 11 gruppo :)

Black open pro's for rims surely? Everyone had them in the 90s.

The NOS kit for campag only goes back to 2000. I have a number of satin finish Daytona cranksets in stock but apart from front mechs there is nothing else Daytona available now.

So for a complete group I would go with Veloce. Incicdently £36 is expensive for veloce brakes, I sell them on ebay and in the shop for alot less but the cranksets Halford are selling are those veloce cranks well below trade cost from all of the distributors. So all that kit for £77 must see them at a loss unless it is a OEM surplus purchase.

Thanks for all your replies. NOS stuff is not really an option as pricing is just stupid...Veloce doesn't appeal to me much. (bever liked bottom of the range stuff) I'd prefer Centaur but it's no longer in Silver. I guess a 2nd hand 10 group (Daytona 2002) or new 11 speed Athena are the only options. Now for some wheels...Have to be old school 32 spoke grey rims with maybe Ambrosio low flange hubs...

By the way the rear triangle is 126mm. Frame is brand new and still good paint so will have to cold set. In fact a 130 mm wheel will just fit anyway...

As I said earlier, I have a mix of old Record and 2009 Centaur both of which pop up on Ebay quite regularly.

Also, why not silver alloy Ambrossio rims? Either Excellence or Excellight AFAIK are available.
I have the Excellence to get 32 holes.

Then again, I want my bike to be unique too!
