105 rear derailleur compatibility
quick question. Can i replace a 2300 8 speed rear derailleur with a 105 10 speed one and still use the 8 speed cassette/shifter/chain? Namely this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-105-5701-10-speed-rear-derailleur/ I'm getting poor changes, from my current one so want to give it a bit of an overhaul, fitting a new chain, cassette and derailleur, but cant afford new shifters to move totally to 10 speed rear. The aim is to eventually go full 105, but at the moment i need new bits to replace worn ones and it seems pointless buying twice.

Probably yes. It's the shifter that determines how far the mech moves with each click.0

according to the online chat guy on wiggle it wont work0

If you read the blurb beneath the item on Wiggle's own page it says "compatible with 8, 9 and 10 speed drivetrains" What does your online Wiggle chatty man have to say about that??0

Mech should work fine as its the shifters do the indexing, not sure of the compatibility of chains/chainsets are though0

yes it will work but it will not be the mech that is causing the issues."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

thanks, the idea was that i could get the derailleur now to break up the purchase of the 105 groupset. I think ill stick with a new chain and cassette and just give it a service and full clean out.0

You won't need a 10-speed derailleur to use a 10-speed back block. You'll be able to use your 8-speed mech with 10-speed shifter perfectly OK; the only reason to change would be aesthetic (assuming your 8-speed derailleur is in good working order).- - - - - - - - - -

The geometry of 8/9/10 Shimano road mechs is the same - it's only variation in the amount of cable pull the shifter pulls that dictates the amount of linear movement. The guy at Wiggle needs to do bike maintenance 101 or is getting confused with MTB stuff.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Yea I was under the same impression, but my concern would be the extra width of the 8 speed chain and whether it would be to wide to go round the pulleys cleanly... I asked another chat guy ok wiggle and he agreed that it will only work with 10 speed cassettes and chains0

Well he's talking crap then. I have a road 10-spd mech on my 8-spd commuter (and MTB shifters to boot) and the gear shift is rifle-bolt sharp.- - - - - - - - - -
