Hi can anyone help, I am wanting a bit easier gearing for the hills until i get some fitness up, My current bike has an 11-28 casette which i know is big anyway but i really struggle up the longer steeper hills and i seem unable to ride out of the saddle due to an old lower leg / ankle injury.

I was thinking of changing to a triple crank set but this seems an expensive option i have now seen that there is an sram 11-32 casette available and wondered if anyone could tell me if this would fit my current setup without any problems, My bike has 10 speed 105 (5700 i think) compact 50/34 with 11-28 rear casette and it's a 2013 specialized roubaix.

Any help really appreciated.

  • 28T is the most recommended for the original 5700 rear deraileur, however a newer version was quietly released that has a largest sproket size of 32T with a double - you can tell you have this by looking around the wheels of the derailleur it'll have '30T' stamped there.
  • BTW '30T' refers to the largest sproket you can use when also using a triple.

With the B screw right in you can usually get 30T to run fine with a 30-39-50 triple on any 105 medium cage (but not 32T). A Tiagra casette for example.

I'm running a compact 5700 on one bike and a medium cage rear derailleur with a 32t cassette.

    (SHIMANO 105 rear derailleur RD-5701 GS )
for dual crankset max. sprocket size 27 - 32 teeth
    · for triple crankset max. sprocket size 25 - 30 teeth
    · total capacity*2: 40 teeth

    Hi,

I had exactly the same hill issues on my Specialized Allez Elite with full compact Tiagra kit. Swapped the rear cassette for an 11-32 and have had no issues at all, as long as I don't use the big front ring and big rear cassette together (not that you would, anyway). Other than that, it's perfect for the Mendip Hills I live in!

Ah ha, didn't realise the new version was called the RD-5701.

Thanks for replies guys, good to know i can go the cheaper 11-32 option rather than switching to a triple.
  • My riding mate fitted a 9sp.shim. cassette, largest sprocket 34 TOOTH onto a campag.veloce mech. he then set the low gear gear limit screw & bob's your uncle. When the 34 is in use he remembers not to use the 10th. click, I know folk say it will not work mixing the shim./ campag. but I know what I have seen, it changes well & runs sweet. He bought new back wheel with shim. freewheel & 9sp. cassette, so if you're prepared to go from 10 to 9 speed get a 34 tooth job.

You could use a RD-M771 GS rear mech (XT) which will take a 11-34T cassette on a compact. That what I did recently for a customer who is eading to the Alps shortly.
