Shifter/Front mech

Complete newbie to the mechanical side here so I will apologise in advance.

While out yesterday I tried changing down from the big ring and couldn't. It's done this before, but changed back after numerous attempts. I spent a good hour or two on the ride home and in the garden trying to get it to change, cleaning and checking the cables etc but with no luck.

It's Shimano Tiagra. The shifter moves, but doesn't 'complete' the change. No idea what's wrong, if the problem is with the shifter or the front mech?!

I hope someone can help, if you need more info (I'm sure you will) just ask.

Cheers

does the cable go slack? if yes then it is a mech issue if no then a shifter issue.

    No, cable doesn't go slack.

Is it something I'll be able to fix via youtube or park website or should I just head to LBS?

Ok. I've 'played' with the shifter and that seems to be moving the front deralleur but not clicking into place. So you can move and hold the shifter and it'll change gear but as soon as you let go it'll change back.

Any ideas or tips, it's sending me mad :x

Sorry, should add that although the shifters were moving (my first post) they weren't actually moving the derailleur. After a little bit of fettling I have the derailleur moving now but not changing gear.
