9sp & 10sp front changer difference?
I have several front changers including a Shimano Ultegra 6503 and 105- 5703
Is there any difference between the 9sp and 10sp changers?
I am having a problem with 105 STi 10sp shifters moving the chain accross all 3 rings and wondered if the "shift ratio" is different between 9 &10speed. If I adjust it to engage the big ring it wont drop to the little ring and vice versa.

Are you sure the front shifter is a triple shifter, from what you describe, only getting 2 out of 3 shifts it is most likely shifter related. The Fd are specific to triple or double, mainly the inner shift plate is bigger to account for 3 different ring sizes. Also check limit screws.0

They are definately triples, the "03" part of the number also confirms this. Without the cable attached the changers spans all 3 rings and more. The problem seems to be persuading the triple 10speed STi lever (Shimano 105) to pull a bit more cable and move the changer a bit further. I was asking if the 10speed changers are mechanicaly different to the 9speed versions.0

The right shifter is for the rear it has no effect on the front derailleur, that is the left shifter. The left shifter comes in 2 flavours, double or triple, so harping on about 9 or 10 speed is irrelevant. You need to check if you have a triple left shifter and a triple front deailleur mechanism. If you have then it is cable set up and limit screws.0

Double and triple shifters have the same range of motion. The differences between them lie in the cage design, which is shallower on a double as it does not have to cover such a wide range of chainring diameters.
There is no difference in terms of mechanical advantage between 9sp and 10sp, but there is a slight difference between Shimano road and Shimano MTB.
If I were you I'd double check that the cable is correctly seated in the shifter.- - - - - - - - - -

It is the left hand triple shifter. I do not have a problem with the right hand 10sp shifter. The front mechs ARE triple but not the current models which Shimano show as part of the 10speed groupset. Can the left hand 105 triple shfter cause a problem like this? I did have one on another bike that jammed.
Cable seating looks good.

I don't know about road shifters but certainly, when mountain bikes moved from 8 to 9 speed the range of motion of the front derailleur changed to be smaller as the 9 speed cranks place the front rings slightly closer together due to the 9 speed chain being narrower (i think the difference was altered at the derailleur, not the shifter... but i could be wrong). Certainly, my 8 speed shifter attached to my SRAM 9 speed front derailleur always shifted the rings perfectly (i had to use the limiters to stop it moving too far). Now that i've switched out my 8 speed shifters for 9 speed (so shifter and front derailleur now match) i find it doesn't move as far and can be a bitch to get it to jump from the outer to the middle or the middle to the small even with the limiter screws as far out as they can go. Which suggests the shifter itself isn't pulling as much cable as before.
They may have altered the ring spacing and derailleur movement range when the newer 10 speed designs started coming in (for both road and MTB bike). Since i don't own a 10 speed i couldn't say.0
