My mtb is probably a 1999 stumpjumper comp, I say probably cos I bought it second hand and I've had it since 2004 and it's done me proud over the time.
Now its getting creaky and things are going wrong but I'm quite attached to it. Here\'s the prob:
Marzocchi Bomber atom 80 forks need a good service (replacement/upgrade?)
Wheels need a service
I'd like a new saddle and pedals
Shifters are worn and inprecise, rachet on front deraileur not 100% trustworthy
Brakes ok, recently serviced but I'd like to be able to afford discs
So is it time to finally retire the old thing to and spend £500 on a lower spec but new machine?
Or keep the basically sound and solid frame and spend the money on a big service and refit?
Is the frame itself decent enough quality to add a new set of components to? Cosmetically it carries many battle scars but its basically still sound.

A top end new fork can be had for less than 300. Shifters a lot less.0

What about second hand, you might get a newer model with fresher components?0

Yep thats the question, is the frame worth holding on to enough, to warrant paying £250 for new shocks, £35 for new shifters, etc. etc. or should I just scrap the lot and spend £500 on a new (or better component slightly worn second-hand) bike?0 -
Is it a V-braked stumpy, so a new fork would more than likely require a new wheel and brake? You might just be better off getting something like a Rockrider in the end.0
