I have the option of either shimano ultegra or mavic cosmic elite.

The wheels will be used for training and general commuting rides.

Can anyone tell the strengths and weaknesses of each?

Thanks

If you only have the choice of those two the go with the shimano's as they should be more relaible. You do however have a lot more choice than that.

  • Mavic cosmic elite: more of a race designed wheel and wont take a lot of beating.

Shimano Ultegra: a more daily use well will take a lot more impact and wear.

from those two in you situation i would choose the shimano

however there are a lot more wheelsets and i would go for a Mavic or something

Mavics have cartridge bearings, no fiddling just replace them (but dearer). Shimanos have cup and cone, annoying and fiddly to service although others will disagree with me. Don't know about the Mavics but the Shimanos have a totally silent freehub, which is nice on a descent.

I got a used set of Ultegras for 110 quid on ebay 18 months ago and they're lovely wheels, guy in my LBS described them as bomb proof. If you ever break a spoke they'll be easy to find. The Mavics are really nice, well made wheels too. So many choices!
