Campag SR rear mech max cassette size?

Guys, the Fred Whitton is getting close and my nerves are starting to get the better of me. Running a triple up front isn't an option and already running compact rings at the front. Only thing left is to increase the teeth on the cassette.

I must admit to being a little confused when it comes to maximum cog size with standard rear mechs (ie not long cage). I was running 10spd 12-23 on my summer bike (can get round most of what Northumberland can throw at me on that ratio) but have upgraded to 11spd for this year. I have a 12-25 11spd cassette but I'm wanting something a little bigger for the FW. For some strange reason I thought the maximum cog size for a 2012 SR rear mech was a 26, I was going to go for a 27 thinking it's only one more tooth. But, I'm sure I've read that the 2012 SR rear mechs can take up to a 29 tooth? I can't find this info anywhere, perhaps I dreamed it?!

If I can use a 12-29 cassette then my prayers may be answered! (don't think it'll get me up Hartside however, but at least it'll get me part way up).

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Muchos gracias in advance.

  • Depends on the year. A running change was made in late 2009 to enable the 29T largest cog. The part is retro-fittable: part code is 5-RD-SR004

Edited to add: a 2012 model is definitely compatible. I'm running a 29T with my 2012 Chorus RD

Most short cage campag mechs will run larger sprockets than the spec says.

You said you upgraded to 11 this year - so assuming it's a modern SR gruppo, then the docs say:

    http://www.campagnolo.com/repository/do ... _10_12.pdf

    max: 29, min: 11, capacity 33

    So a 50/34 with an 12/29 has a capacity of 16+17 = 33

Bingo, even in the official specs.

    Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Thanks chaps. Think i'll ditch the 12-27 and go for a 29-er instead.

    Bring on the FW!!!!

I ran 50/34 rings & 12/29 cassette on my bike for the Etape last year. No problems at all. 11 speed Super Record throughout

And yes, I did use the 29.

I'm so lazy that I only changed it back to 12/27 last weekend :D
