Chainset change

I've had my chainset since I have bought my bike in October and am looking to upgrade it as it is now outdated and quite worn.
I have yet to have any problems with skipping or stretching however it seems like the changing of the gears has become slacker and more clunky with a occasional bite of the upper ring of the sprocket from time to time.
The bike is currently a 8 speed with Shimano m442 crankset and a cheap Shimano chain.
As always with my request for suggestions I prefer to keep prices low as the bike cost me £360 in the first place.
I am looking at having either:
Truvativ Ruktion 24/36t crankset with a KMC Z82
or a
buying the same crankset again and remove the large or small ring and add a Shimano Deore LX chain
Have I made the right choice of trying to go 2 X 8 on the drive or would that be too much of a risky choice to make?
Thanks

My god road cycling is scary! I'm going to keep my relaxing rides to the trails where everything is green, fast and less crazy.

Sounds like your bike just needs some maintenance to get it shifting nicely again. Save your money for a while and get a Shimano Deore or SLX complete 10 speed groupset.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
