Ultegra 6600 levers problem
OK, so I'm ill-advisedly trying to build up my bike with a load of new parts and am struggling at the STI levers stage.
Gearing issues apart (can't get the front derailleur fitted correctly for the life of me without, it would appear, an extra hand), there doesn't seem to be anywhere to thread the brake cables through.
I've taken the nameplate off the front of the levers and there's what looks like a cable-sized hole (in fact, the only hole) through which to thread the cable, but on closer inspection, there's something blocking it, so the cable will only go in about 5mm before stopping.
Anyone help? This is deeply frustrating and I can't find any videos out there for 6600 (plenty for 6700, of course).
Thanks.

Push the gear lever to the side and pull the brake lever in it's normal plane, Look into the body of the lever and find the small hole, a torch might help.
The above only works with cable brakes and not hydraulic Ultegra STI leversI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
Have a look on Shimano Techdocs. You should be able to find the Service Instructions for 6600 shifters. Here you go.

Brilliant. Sorted. Thanks.
Now to grapple with the front derailleur issue.0 -
FWIW I always find it easiest to fit the F/D and set the height clearance (big ring) before fitting the chain or F/D cable. You can operate the F/D by hand to check the required 1-2 mm clearence.0

I usually set FDs with a handily sized wedge of wood lodged between the mech and the seat tube. Start with the barrel adjuster wound all the way in.
I realise this isn't much use if you are not a hoarder of timber like I am.- - - - - - - - - -
