I'm looking at getting myself a set of nice chinese carbon wheels but am swinging towards buying all the parts seperately and getting them built properly as I'm not sure i fully trust the far eastern builds. I'm going to order the hubs from the us, rims from china and all the spokes etc from the uk. I'm looking for recomendations on either clincher or tubular and also any well respected wheel builders that could put all the pieces together.

    Builds are fine though.

If it's just the build you're worried about, wouldn't it work out cheaper/easier to buy a complete set of wheels and have a reputable builder re-tension and true them?

  • It's more I was looking to make them as lightweight as possible so was looking at different hubs to the standard novatec ones
  • What hubs are you looking at that are lighter than Novatec (sure Tune and Dash are lighter but they're not in the same league)?

I'm wondering because from what I've read to date the various cheap alternatives to Novatec are basically all worse (some a lot worse), either because of poor design (flange spacing etc) or durability (weight losses through bearings that are so small that they only last 500 miles...).

Also the hub weight has far less effect on a wheel than the rim weight as the hub is centred so has very little rotating mass, which is the thing that you notice.

Heavier hub and lighter rim is far better than the other way round.
    Yellow is the new Black.
  • The hubs I've spotted are from bikehubstore.com the ultralight set. I can't put a link up as I'm on my phone at the moment
