Giant defy 1 on ctw or 2nd hand carbon ?

Newish to road cycling so not much idea on sizing etc.
good LBS localy stocks Giant bikes and my place of work are looking into cycle to work schemes.
My question is , should i wait and buy a Giant of the CTW or go it alone and buy 2nd hand carbon.
I am looking to pay £700 - £1000.
To be honest a bit frightened of buying 2nd hand , have seen some lovely bikes in the FS section of Bikeradar but arenot sure of sizing and I dont think I have the balls to actualy press the button.
Any advise is very much appreciated.
Or do i upgrade my three month old Giant TCX 2 and bin all of the above ?
