Integrated Seatpost

Hi All,

I have a question re: extending the range of my ISP. Picture attached.

Would you think it wise to dremmel the existing "slit" a bit further (1.5cm max) to get the required seat height. Other alternative is to get DeRosa to build me a extended seat post and that is not the "cheapest" option!! However, if should the strength of the seat post be affected, its probably the only solution I have at the minute.. changing the seat for larger rail to top length, i have considered but I would only gain 15mm....

Thanks for any help!
Timujin

I wouldn't personally, it looks like the top post fits into the frame mast, if so doing your mod you'd have a fair bit less post inside the mast so the forces would be concentrated in a smaller area - I doubt it's been designed with that in mind so it's a question of whether there's enough safety margin built into the correct fitting that it would still be strong enough with your mod. Looks a really odd way of doing an ISP anyway to me, you have to drill the mast as part of the fitting?

    Hey Thanks for Replying nferrar...

No it came pre-drilled. its ok when I ride, but the fitter suggested I get the seat raised by 1.5cm... i dont have any knee pain, taken it out twice now... my inseam is 79cm, so if you take the rule 109% it gives me top of seat to pedal of 86cm which I have...

If it ain't broke then don't fix it - if it feels fine, rides fine, power goes down fine, looks fine when you're sitting on it then its fine.

IMO cutting it to where you indicate on your photo is a VERY BAD idea.

Leave it where it is? So what if the fitter told you to raise your saddle, you don't have to. The fitter may be incorrect. Ive heard of it happen before, different bike fitters giving different set ups.

I am sure its just the angle of the seat... ive changed it now and see if the patella pain goes away... it had very little discomfort yesterday, and the little that was, was due to the fact about 30 of our group decided on a breakaway sprint and sprinting up hills lol...

Two very different scenarios two very different answers - firstly you say you don't have knee pain ... so all the ain't broke don't fix it replies make good sense. Then though you refer to your patellar pain which (especially if central and directly behind the patella) would suggest the seat is too low.

If it's the latter spend the money and get it right --- patella replacements cost way more than ISPs - whatever you do don't drill the one you have though.

Pain behind the kneecap can simply be a chronic over-use inflammation - before making irreversible modifications to your bike components, could it just be down to over-doing it?
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Very true - post patellar pain has numerous possible causes, over use strain is certainly one. The nature of the onset and if it improves with rest and stays away under a more appropriate exercise regime would be the main sign that that was the culprit. If it improves with rest but returns even with more moderate exercise then it may not be.

PS- Do some research on Physio and anterior knee pain to see how many theories and fads there have been on diagnosis, cause and treatment over the years if you fancy confusion. Its even worse if you throw in bike fit as a possibility

    Thanks Guys for the info...

on my old bike i never had knee issues.. so ive decided to see a biomechanic specialist.... its the only sure way to see if there are more than one OBVIOUS issues.... will take it from there...

going to see him next week and wont ride till then, the pain in the knee has gone, with the help of ice!!!!

  • Glad to hear its settled.

Monty Dog's comments still hold true but if this is pain that has only come on since you got this new bike and your training/exercise regime has not altered since getting the new bike (in no major changes like e.g. big increases in distance, intensity and/or frequency of rides etc) I think the balance of probability shifts fairly markedly towards it being due to some bike fit issue. I am a physio to trade but not any specialist in bike fitting but FWIW I have always found this to be accurate
