Looks like my summer hols in August are on the isle of man this year due To a turn of fate

What is it like on there for riding ???? What should I make sure I include

Guess I'm going to see a lot in a week but want to include the best bits and roads

Cheers

I'm currently reading Boy Racer; I'll see if Cav recommends any particular routes.

He tweeted a while back about the mile of cycle path on the island and getting a grumpy old sod yelling at him for daring to cycle on it. No idea where that might be.

Maybe they're all Cyclepaths on the island. Boom Boom. Coat?

Its not a massive island - I'd have thought you'd be able to cover most of it ? Have you googled the manx TT course ?

riding the TT coarse would be good especially over the mountain.Lots of uyube clips on it and you can start close to where ever your staying mostly.Just watch for motorbikes though.

  • Loads of riding. There is another thread kicking about with some good advice on there, and some of the best Strava segments

Riding the course is a good shout, but best to do it at an "off-peak" time (ie, not 9am, 5pm, or sat/sun when the weather is nice). Bikes belting past at 200mph+ is something of an aquired taste.

We're only a small Island, but we're BIG on cycling, loads of great route options and once you get out of Douglas, it's almost entirely rural/semi-rural.

Depending on when in Aug you're coming, you could maybe enter into the Appleby Sportive or the Ramsey Town centre race (part of a series).

  • That sounded great but I go the last week in August so unluckily miss these rides

Il try and find the other thread, looks a nice place but don't fancy the motorbike flyby

Will need to keep an eye on that

Are there any club rides going on during the week I'm there..?

Would be nice to get a nice few rides in while there

A nice loop is from Ramsay, north up to Bride, down past Jurby and then up Sulby Glen to meet the mountain road and then drop back down into Ramsay.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • sounds like an excellent starter.. thanks

  • I would love to ride the TT mountain course. Lived on the island for two years when I was a teen and wasn't a big fan (no offence to the Manx guys in the thread) and never felt compelled to return before taking up cycling.

That is a really nice ride. Roads round the North are dead quiet, and most of them are in fairly reasonable condition. That climb up from Sulby to the top of the mountain has (imho) the best views on the entire island too. It's an absolute 'mare of a climb when it's windy though (like it was when I did it last sunday).

The I.O.M is beautiful, not been there since my childhood, but remember being driven round the TT route and it is a range from flat roads through villages up into the hills with views across the countryside. Would love to go back on a cycling holiday one day.
