I need to replace the gear cable for the rear derailliuer on my SRAM Rival equipped Boardman Team Carbon.
Question is are the stock outers for 1.1mm or 1.2mm gear cable inners?

My brake outers have Shimano SLR on them but gear cables dont have anything written on them.
Cheers, Stu

If they are Shimano cables it would be 1.2 but 1.1 can be used as well with no noticable difference. Both are interchangeable with either ID housing. Don't waste your money on teflon coated either as the teflon can cause more problems than it solves since the coating can sometimes come off and gum up the shifters.

Thanks. I've played safe and ordered some Jagwire stainless 1.1mm.

  • AFAIK the outers are all the same but SRAM is optimised for 1.1mm and Shim for 1.2 - this site has all the options and descriptions of the differences -

    Cheers.
I've had another look at the cable outers and it has Shimano SIS SP41 on them so the usual 1.2mm should do (must of ben half asleep last night!)....i'll cancel the 1.1mm order and pickup the 1.2mm Shimano stainless from Ribble tomorrow on the way home from work.

  • Up to you of course but your Rival shifters were designed to be used with 1.1mm inners - they will work with 1.2mm but for me if the manufacturers intended them to be used with 1.1 I use 1.1. Don't choose the inner to suit the outers choose it to suit the system - outers are consumables.

As above, sram are designed for 1.1 and I had trouble getting 1.2mm cable through the shifter body whereas 1.1mm flew in (could have been luck though). I personally would not risk 1.2mm if 1.1 is available.

OK noted, will stick with 1.1 then.
