Bryton Rider 50 Questions

Hi,

I realise there are a few threads about the Bryton 50 but it seems like there have been recent updates to the software and changes to the maps that are used so I just wanted to try and clarify a few questions if possible.

Does anywhere provide free maps? I'm going to France/Switzerland in the summer and would like to use it there.

Is there standalone software that will let me view my ride details without having to log into the Bryton website?

I made an account for the Bryton website and tried to plot a route but I didn't find it as easy as using ridewithgps.com. Can I just save the .gpx file from ridewithgps and load it onto the Bryton, or do I need to upload it to the Bryton website and then download it again and transfer it to the Bryton?

I have some Wiggle vouchers and I'm stuck trying to decide between the Garmin 500 Premium with breadcrumb trails for £170, Bryton 50 for £200 or splashing out on the Garmin 800 performance for £265. Thanks for any advice.

  • Anyone? Even if you want to convince me it's worth spending £265 on a bike computer, I'm all ears!

Yes - you can load any gpx to the 50; you can upload directly to the computer without using the website at all. Not sure where the current state of play is re OSM maps - it's certainly planned but possibly not implemented.

If you are OK with the Breadcrumb trails you could equally use a Bryton 40 for £130. I'd be tempted to pay £170 for a Bryton 50 and £80 for a Bryton 20 and have one very small, very neat unit for most of the time and the bulkier mapping unit for those occasions when you really want mapping.

  • Thanks for the reply. That's good that you can just drag the gpx file onto the computer, I had read a few conflicting posts about that.

Ideally I'd have clear maps for when I go to France/Switzerland... it looks like I would need to spend €69 to purchase those maps if there aren't any free alternatives.

It's a relatively recent update. As for the maps - if you are plotting your routes and don't mind taking a chance of adlibbing detours, you don't actually need the maps at all. You can navigate a pre-programmed route perfectly well (sometimes better!) without the maps! The only problem comes if you get diverted or fancy a detour - the unit then won't be able to renavigate you back onto the route. I did this in Holland and it worked very well indeed.

  • Oh ok, thanks. I'm trying to get my hands on one so that I can see how clear the maps are in person. It's a bit difficult to tell from the images online and I read on one review (might have been bikeradar) that you couldn't zoom in far enough..although I think that may have been with the old maps.
