Hi all. Thinking of upgrading my Tektro Vee brakes on my Specialized Singlecross to a pair of Avid Digit 7s:

Was going to just upgrade the brake pads but see that these come with holders and pads and will only cost £20 quid or so more, and have heard good things about the Avids. Question is, will the Avids work ok with my Tektro singlespeed brake levers?
cheers

No, the Avids are an MTB brake optimised for use with a lever with a different cable pull ratio. You either need to use a brake travel adjuster with these to work with a road lever otherwise you get a very spongy brakes:

Thanks for that, a lucky save. Will go with the Koolstop pads then to see if they improve things. If not, I'll try removing the brakes, grease, reassemble and put new cables on. cheersTitus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...0

The brake levers fitted to Singlecrosses are Tektro RL520 which have the required cable pull for full size v-brakes. An upgrade of pads is a good cheap start for improving braking.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

thanks Redvee. I've noticed the rear brake doesn't move back to the open position easily after brake is applied, leading to the pad touching the rim. Ive messed about with the tensioner screws so both arms move equal distances when the cable is pulled taught. Would new cables and a bit of TLC be likely to cure this?Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...0

Yes, lube the inner & outers or splash out on Gore cables like I did for my Singlecross. Not lubed them in 3 years, only adjusted them for pad wear. Might be worth taking the brakes off the mounts and cleaning and lubing them too.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
Cheers. With the Gore cables do the outers also run along the full length of the top tube? As a fair amount of naked cable runs above the top tube, I reckon that's where the cable gets wet and presumably corrodes inside the outers over time. Or are the cables just better sealed either side of where the outer stops between the anchor points (can't remember proper name  )?Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...0

My Gore cables have a liner in the outer over the inner cable that runs from the lever to the end of the cable but the cables ain't cheap, around £40+I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0
