Hello,

after being out of the saddle for a while now (road race bike) and before i hit 40, im thinking of trying this off road lark! Are there any suitable routes that anyone know of around the Wincanton area? hopefully not too boggy :o)

Im also thinking of venturing up the Quantock hills, is there anyone who has done this and can advise the most fun trails to take and suitable parking.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

The best trails can be accessed from crowcombe park gate which has free parking, but these might not be suitable for beginners. Easy route parking is at lydeard hill car park then follow track to triscombe then crowcombe parke gate to halsway post then turn right to dead womans ditch back to crowcombe, triscombe and lydeard hill car park.Route can be googled. Plenty of Parking at lydeard hill but if its a good day it can get full with mtbs and walkers.
  • An option for great Quantocks rides which aren't too challenging is to park in Holford and cycle up Holford Combe to the top bridleway. Then you can explore the ridge for a bit before descending back down one of the combes (Hodders or Holford but there are others). These are some of the best natural downhills anywhere in my opinion, especially if dry. When wet they can turn into small rivers so mudguards are recommended. Great Wood/Triscombe has some awesome downhill trails but as stir88 said, not really for beginners.
