I'm new to road cycleing.

I was wondering when buying a new chain will any chain work or do I have to buy a specific size? I know I have to make it the right length, I'm wondering about width etc

Thanks

Chains are speed rated which ensures they are the correct width.

If you have a 10 speed groupset you need a 10 speed chain.

And to make it the right length just shorten it to match the old one.

Given the OP question it might be worth adding - shorten the new one to have the same number of links as the old one - the old one (if it needs replaced) will be longer (despite having the same number of links) due to
    chain stretch
