I've a 34/50 standard compact. To increase the 34t to a 36t do I just need to make sure its a shimano with the right BCD? Mine is 8 speed and all the ones I've seen are for 9/10 speed.

Thanks

Doesn't have to be Shimano - you might find TA or Stronglight rings at Spa cycles for much less money.

Kudos for wanting to go 36 on an 8 speed in Leeds! What's your cassette range?

BCD rules, 8/9/10 speed does not matter.
    Yellow is the new Black.
  • 13/27, looked at changing the cassette but easier and quicker with a chainring.

I'm not a mad cyclist  , just not happy with my current gearing.

I can see the logic with that cassette that a 36 tooth chainring would make sense. Still, suprised at your conclusion re cassette slower to change than a chainring. There's five bolts to undo on the chainring, then after taking off the big ring, you have to thread the small ring out which possibly might be tricky and then, on reassembly, the whole process again plus all the fiddly insertions of nut and bolt and faffing around making sure that the rings are still properly straight and true.

On the other hand, a cassette is just a couple of minutes on and off and occasional cassette removal should be part of your normal cleaning routine anyway.

  • true, I do like to tinker a bit though. Cassettes aren't that expensive, it was a suggestion from an experienced cycling colleague at work that got me thinking. I find I don't use the 34 ring that much and when I do I struggle to find the gears I need. Worth a try and not particularly expensive.

    thanks for your help

No worries. Personally, I'd just go 12-25 on the cassette (which gives you a faster overall gearing) with the 50-34 and keep the 13-27 for longer, harder days. I normally use 12-25 but have a 13-29 for tough days in the Dales. I just swap over as required.

  • ok, I'd thought of that too, think your beginning to sway me as I'd have the option of just swapping cassettes depending on where I'm cycling. Not that much dearer. Will look into it before deciding. Anywhere in-particular you'd look for as cheap as possible cassettes?
  • I've got all the cassette swapping tools too.

£18:99 unless anyone see's any cheaper?

Can't see you easily beating that CRC price! Not by enough to justify the effort of looking anyway!
