After a winter bashing on the wheels that came with my giant defy1 I'm thinking of treating myself to some spare wheels that I can then keep for the nice/dry days.
I've found the ultegras at Planet X for £240 and I've already got a new pair of conti 4000s.
Any thoughts if this would be a good value setup suitable for the defy without shelling out silly money... I'm still classing myself as a beginner doing regular 35miles up to my max around 60, so not looking for anything too spectacular at this stage :D

Look good value at the price you've found them at. I had the previous versions and did thousands of miles on them in all weathers until a huge pothole finally killed off the rear for good. If these are as good as the old versions then they'll be ideal.
  • antooony, it was that review plus the one cycling plus mag that made me look into them.. Like I say I doubt at my level I would appreciate anything pricer while at the same time having some 'nicer' spares :)

    good value for money wheelset.

Some might say they arent that 'bling', but a light, responsive yet robust wheel.

Of course I'd love some bling wheels :D but also understand that for the riding I currently do they look completely acceptable, as an improvement over what I have but at the same time don't break the bank.
There have been lots of threads on here about wheels but never a definitive list, and I see many beginners asking the same question over and over and there is never a clear cut out right winner.
I haven't purchased them yet so I'm still open to suggested alternatives?

Even if there was such a thing as a definitive list, people would still be asking the same question over and over.

  • Thanks ugo, one of those topics that will keep cropping up.
  • I had a pair of Ultegra 6700 wheels. Not bad but found it difficult to keep them true. Lovely hubs, light and reasonably responsive but I really noticed a difference moving up to dura ace wheels with scandium rims - much stiffer and responsive - really improved the ride of my caad 9 - turning it into a missile!
