Need a new chain - whats good ?

Looking to replace the stock KMC DX10SC that came on my SRAM Rival equipped bike. Needs to be 10 speed and have removable link. Should I buy the same ? Or is there a worthwhile upgrade (don't mind a few quid more !)

Also - do I need a special link removal tool for 10 speed chains ? My ancient tool won't remove the pin from the broken face plate on the link and the replacement tool I bought today doesn't work either (despite shop telling me it would). It's not vital as I want to replace the chain but I may need to take some links out so need a tool that works for that.

Thanks

  • Stick with KMC and order direct from Taiwan on Ebay (much cheaper take about two weeks to come) get yourself a small 10 speed chain tool (I have a Lezyne and it fine) as its handy to have out with you along with a spare link (having that in my saddle bag got me to work and back last month after my chain snapped mid commute).

KMC X10L, good vfm and great quality.

Ref the broken link, try a bit more wellie. A lot of chains now have mushroom pins so take a bit of force (and then the pins are not supposed to be replaceable...although I have done it the odd time without problem).

I've been using Dura Ace / XTR for years on road and MTB with no issued at all. I swap out the link pin for a SRAM / KMC link and let them get on with being a chain. I've only once had an issue, but that was due to an unscheduled dismount from the MTB, which ruined the rear mech and bent the chain.
