All carbon - To clamp the seat tube or seat pillar?

When I'm maintaining my bike I always clamp it on the stand by the seat pillar but know that some prefer to use the seat tube as the seat pillar takes the majority of weight and they don't want to risk a high speed carbon failure and end up with a big dental bill. I on the other hand don't want to have to replace an expensive carbon frame. What are your thoughts guys?

Don't clamp the frame seat-tube - you should really replace the carbon seatpost with a metal one to save yourself any trouble.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • What Monty said, or better still get a workstand that holds your bike by the BB and forks rather than clamps the seat post. Don't clamp the frame, it will end in tears!

Thanks guys. I've never clamped the seat, I just can't see how that would be the right thing. Can't afford a new stand at the minute but had a brainwave last night to remove the front wheel before clamping on to balance the weight better.

Remember, seat posts are designed to take a clamping force along their whole length (it's how they held in position). Seat tubes are not designed that way.
