I know how much you love a tyre thread

Hi all,

my Continental ultra race tyres have had it.
The front has a split and the back is squared off.

They are 25mm and on a Focus Cayo.

I am considering the Michelin Pro4 Course tyres. Is this a better tyre?
Would i be better off staying with 25mm?

I have been happy with the Conti URs as they have lasted over 2k miles with only a couple of punctures and seem to roll well.

Just thought it may be worth a change

Matt

I have the Michelins after riding conti gp4000 for a couple of years. Love them. I prefer their profile, which you can read more about in any online shop product overview, as I feel more confident on corners with them. Would recommend. Never tried any vottorias though, which I know can also be highly regarded.

Oh, and probably suggest trying 23s unless you have a specific reason for riding the 25s

What is the reason for this?

THe bike came with 25's and i assumed some of the comfort and little amount of puntures was because they were 25mm :?

The roads i ride on are rubbish. and if i'm doing 80 - 120k at a time, i would have thought the extra comfort and protection would be better.

Not sure if my current Contis are folding though

Have you not heard, riding 23 on wider rims is the new 25!

    stick with 25s

if you're going at high speed there can be some aero benefit with a narrow front - depends on the rim - and a small weight difference, otherwise wider wins

25s will have better traction, lower rolling resistance, last longer, ride better, and be a bit less likely to puncture
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Ohh ... what an embarrassment - I am soo last year darlings please forgive me.

PS Does that mean 25s on wider rims is the new 28 - are we all communters now? Shall I break out my fair isle cardigan and pipe then?

I'm not getting involved! I just prefer 23s and made the suggestion so that said chap can make up his own mind. Peace and love to all mankind (and animalkind) :D

Loving animal kind is not allowed....except in Germany and Sweden, although I think the Germans are about to outlaw it.

Everyone has their favourite when it comes to tyres but honestly Conti UR are the worst tyres I have ever ridden. They feel hard and harsh, no confidence when cornering at speed and I had two sidewalls split.

People rave about the conti gp4000 but I won't use conti again. I like Vredestein on the winter bike and something nice like vittoria corsa or Veloflex on the summer bike.

Depends what riding your doing, are you looking for an all year round tyre?

Right. I'm moving to Sweden. Are there any decent hills there? :P

What he said, 25s all the way.

Plus (especially given that you're doing long rides) if you do get a p*******re, it's easier to get decent pressure with a mini pump than for a 23c, ie you may need just 90-95psi whereas for a 23c you need 100-110psi - most mini pumps can't achieve the latter despite what the blurb says. If, at the time, you're 95 miles from the end of a 100 mile Sportive, it'd be nice to get proper pressure back in your tyres.
