Which wheels do you think would suit this bike ?
The bike is shockingly harsh to ride although that may well be norm, ive been out of the saddle for 20 years.
Im looking for a different set, ideally deeper rims but lightweight and good spec.
Advice appreciated.

Not in line with your brief but I would say if you want comfy then go for something like Ambrosio Excellight rims with 32 or even 36 spokes and hubs of your choice/budget.

I have some 32's on Novatech hubs and they ride really nice and like being on air compared to my semi deep 420 Aero wheels.

With the shape of the seat post is this more of a triathlete type bike?

For comfort have you thought about changing for wider tyres first assuming yours are 23mm so worth trying 25mm

But as above lightweight, strong, less spokes would be even harsher

To be honest im not sure, its my first bike for 20 years.
I know its an aero ?
The ride is harsh, very harsh although it sticks very well to the road and is super grippy.
I am also heavy at 15st7lb

Keep your wheels, there is nothing wrong with them? If you have clearance, fit 25 or 27 mm tyres

To be honest I don't know how frame designs and finish make one more comfy than others but it does

First try bigger tyres and less pressure ?

But have you seen the new trek domane where they have a moveable seat post part which is suppose to add comfort I think. Doesn't help the matter but just want to illustrate on a possible more comfy frame design, but then most bikes will be rigid but I guess some absorb the road better than others

  • Something with 24mm wide rims, they are comfier and more aero. Check out wheelsmith et al.

Some quality rubber always helps, vittoria say for the same weight you run less pressure in their 320tpi tyres.

    Tubs even???

Thanks for the advice, there is around 6mm of room so I can go up and out in terms of different tyre and will try that.
I love the bike but its harsh.
Having said that, it may well just be me getting used to it ?

I would say it's the opposite... 320 tpi means the thread used is much thinner and makes a lighter carcass. Ultimately this has less rigidity and needs higher pressure, if anything. If you look at the recommended pressure for high TPI tyres, it is always higher than the low TPI ones.

I've an AR5 with pretty much the same frame - it's stiff for sure, but the stock 30mm aero wheels it came with (and look the same as on that pic) are surprisingly comfortable. I ran some 25mm GP4000s over the winter and they were fine, but the best wheels on it were a HED jet 60/90 combo. The thing positively flew with them on!

Normally the width between the chain stays (where they meet the BB/seat tube area) is the limiting factor.

With your frame the gap between the tyre and your seat tube curve will likely be the limiting factor.

Edit: My guess (from the photo) would be 25mm would be your max (assuming 23mm fitted in the picture).

That should be plenty... you only need 4 if you want to go 27 mm

I've just checked, the ones on the bike are 23mm, anyone suggest some good 27mm tyres ?
