Hi guys/gals - any view of the 2012/2013 American Classis Magnesium Clincher. Weight for pair ex tyres and tubes c 1100g. 90kg rider max. £850. As someone who loves the high hills, La Marmotte etc - seems perfect. Am I missing anything - heard that hubs not highest quality - is that still true. Your views pls....

Magnesium alloy rims are relatively a new idea, although magnesium alloy has been used in other areas like motor racing and military aviation. Whether a 300 grams magnesium rim will provide you with enough stiffness, strength, braking performance and fatigue resistance is hard to say. If that was the case, I think magnesium rims will be the next big thing, otherwise they will end up being one of the many "next big thing" that never was...
The hubs are some far eastern CNC jobs, probably OK, surely not meant to last 10 years.
The price tag is hefty, but in line with carbon wheels of similar weight. Of course the same weight can be obtained with a set of tubular at a fraction of the cost and with a proven track record of stiffness and decent durability... but tubulars are taboo for some...
up to you...left the forum March 20230 -
Thanks Ugo..... Would consider tubs but ride long distance Alpine sportives without support, so have veered to clinchers. If I keep wheels for events, hubs should last...0

Can't see them being any good for a 90kg rider. It'd be nice if they are though.0

AM Classic have a reputation for their light build, so would recommend them for heavier riders. Hub design is quirky and weenie bearings don't last long - but cheap and easy to replace.
For similar money you could either try and find some used Campagnolo Hyperons or get something built using 20mm carbon rims from the likes of Planet-X - they would be tubulars though.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
The suppressed weight weenie in me wants. Ugo can you get hold of these rims?! I joke, don't tempt me..0

These are out of stock and won't be restocked... they only have 20 H ones, which are not good enough to build rear wheelsleft the forum March 20230 -

I had a set of Wolber Profil 18 rims... around 300 grams each... they were so bendy it was very difficult to build them. Once tensioned, they were reasonably well behaved and stiff enough... rode them twice... I would have kept them, but the braking was awful... they were simply not worth the hassle and I sold them to a guy who built them into track wheels.
As for magnesium alloys... typically the Young modulus (stiffness to you and me) is lower than that of 6 series aluminum alloy used for rims... so one would guess these to be less than impressive for anyone who can't boxe in the featherweight divisionleft the forum March 20230
