What do riders wear on their torso in this cold weather ? in say 2 or 3 degrees assuming the roads are rideable of course.....
I have been wearing an Endura Stealth jacket but not sure what or how many layers to put on underneath ?
I know everyone is a little different but long or short sleeve, thin base and or something heavier ?
Advice or thoughts please

  • On my top I wear:

    * Short sleeve base layer
    * Short sleeve jersey
    * Arm warmers
    * Endura Windchill gilet

    Keeps me comfortably warm down to 0 or just below. If I wear more than that I get sweaty and I get bad eczema on my arms. If I get cold, I just pedal harder. :D

    Long sleeve base layer and windproof jacket, maybe a gilet too, but that comes off after a while.
  • Long sleeve base layer
    long sleeve top
    gilet

    Also carry a buff for around the neck, though this can come off pretty quickly if I get too hot but normally on the way home after a few hours of exposure will go back on.

    Alternative is short sleeve base layer & my Rapha softshell jacket if its below 0c.
    Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

    Pearl izumi elite softshell jacket and a long sleve base layer from about 5 degrees C down, excellet piece of kit. More layers and a buff below 0.

    Long sleeve base layer
    Long sleeve jersey
    Rapha softshell jacket
    Gore windstopper tights
    Old fleece cap with ear flaps worn under helmet
    Assos Early Winter gloves
  • Down to about 0;
    Short sleeve base layer
    Gore xenon 2.0 SO jacket
    DHB Pace Roubaix bib tights.

    Anything colder and I'll put on an LS baselayer and maybe a dhb Core S jersey if it's really cold.

    Although it's expensive I can't rate the Xenon jacket highly enough, the windstopper matierial is fantastic and I've yet to wish for anything warmer when I've been out. If anything I've ended up too warm by misjudging how cold it really was.

    That is an awful lot of gear. It mst take you half an hour to dress. I didn't wear that much gear in Antarctica.

    How are you not sweating buckets with that lot on?

    Haha I am sweating, but would rather be too hot than too cold. I've always had problems keeping hands and feet warm, but now find keeping core, arms and legs warmer than usual helps keeps the blood warm for the extremeties.

    This lot is for 3-4+ hour rides in freezing cold weather. If I was doing shorter rides I'd wear less. Bulk-wise it's fine as all layers are thin and close fitting, I find layering up just works for me.

    Takes about 15-20 mins to get ready though :oops:

    Mavic H20 Hi Viz Jacket or a windproof Gore - depending on how wet it is
    Long Sleeve Jersey (regular weight)
    Long Sleeve base layer - a thermal one if it's lower than 2 degrees
    Thermal headband
    Endura strike gloves or cheap planet x gloves if over 5 dgrees
    Bibshorts
    Regular tights or Lusso Repel tights if really cold or wet
    Thermal merino socks, regular shoes BBB watershield overshoes

    I find that for layering in winter, generic hiking gear is better than cycling stuff. The rear pockets start to stack up and most of them are useless anyway.
    Merino T shirt base layer
    Polyester jersey or poloneck.
    Fleece or wooly jumper
    Fleece or padded gillet
    Paramo jacket.
    Merino neck tube.

    The gillet can go over or under the shell. Worn over, it can be removed easily when you warm up.

    For -1 to -3 (at the moment)

    Long sleeve base and either a fs260 roubaix jersey or a polaris roubaix windstopper jersey
    a thin craft gilet (if I am feeling cold that day)
    dhb roubaix tights
    dhb roubaix shorts (again if I am having a cold day)
    Thickish merino socks
    endura neoprene overshoes or bbb speedflex ones depending on which ones I can find, the neoprene ones are a tad warmer but not as water proof
    Pearl Izumi select soft shell gloves and silk liners or merino liners
    Buff
    Cap
    Glasses

    I'm rarely cold up top (feet are where I struggle). I got a Helly Hanson Warm top in Russia to keep me warm and am really impressed!

    That plus the Endura Stealth jacket does me well at around 0 degs. Anything much above that though and I'm sweating. I have a lot too much personal insulation on my upper body though which helps!

    For temps around 0 deg:
    Underarmour long sleeve cold weather baselayer
    Normal cycle top
    Windproof rain jacket (not a thin packable one)

    and a buff over the ears.

    These tend to stay in place throughout my ride. with this baselayer I dont tend to feel sweaty.

    Roubaix unpadded tights over Assos bib shorts

    +1 on this. Base layer essential then regular kit and a waterproof layer. If you sweat too much it clings to you and you then get the wind chill of the moisture sat next to your skin.

    I bought an Endura hi vis top for winter. Worn it once as you sweat buckets in it. 3 thin layers beat 1 thick one any day.
