Do the road mechs come in different lengths?
  • I'm currently running a compact with 28 tooth rear cog and am using a short mech. Works perfectly and needs a bit of careful shortening of the chain to get a good balance between the 50x28 gearing and the 34x12 gearing. It would be much easier to set-up with a lot more tolerance using a long cage rear mech, but it is definitely possible and once set-up will run just as smoothly whichever cage you use.
There's warp speed - then there's Storck Speed

Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Shimano have a tech docs section on their website which gives you all you need to know (never checked others).

Basically a rear mech has certain limits and these are specified on the tech docs.

There is a maximum sprocket size stated and also a total capacity so you can easily work out which is suitable.

For your parameters a short cage would be fine.

Yes e.g. certain Shimano ones have 3 to choose from.

Go to the tech docs section on their website. Loads of useful info on there.
