Hi all
What is the verdict on a decent set of climbing wheels...?
Mavic? DT Swiss? Zipp? custom buid?
Im going to majorca in april and was thinking of new wheels. Mid range wheels are what im thinking, but ive read that although some are indeed light, they do not climb so well.... :?
thoughts and experiences would be great
thanks :D

Haven't tried one myself but dura ace c24 seem to have good reviews :) and would cost 2-3x less than zipps et al.
  • got some handbuilts last year, Ambrosia excelight rims, Royce Venus and Ultralight hubs and sapim laser spokes. Been very pleased with them, done around 7000 miles on them with no problems including Etape Acte 2 and my usual training routes in The Peak. My advice would be find a good wheelbuilder and have a chat.

Ime something that does not flex is far better than something really light. The best upgrade for hill climbing though is you as I have found to my cost wheels are no magic answer. :|

For good climbing wheels look for stiff and light, Personally I'd be looking at 32 spoke 3x handbuilts, they should be siff enough and with the right rims and hubs you can offset the extra spokes. Something like a stans alpha 240 rim coupled to the hubs of your choice laced up pretty tight with good spokes, some cx-rays or revolutions.

but the best upgrade for hill climbing if you struggle is lower gearing!

for a good climbing rim, my money would be on the last few remaining of these

They are the only ones that build stiff wheels at 1500 grams without going crazy with uber-expensive or ultralight hubs.

If instead the OP wants a factory built set, I think it is difficult to beat the Ksyrium Elite, they are certainly the stiffest factory wheels in their weight range and they are designed to go up and down
