Hello Everyone,

Another one of these threads again...I'm sure many of you are fed up seeing them.

I've had a good look around and am pretty sure I now know what my options are - buy a new bike or look for a solid secondhand one. I would prefer to go for new bike as I don't know enough about bikes to buy second-hand. Plus the fact there isn't much out there at the minute within my area.

I'll be using my bike for going to work, leisure rides and some light off-roading (trying to keep fit and active). I'm pretty much set on a hardtail which I think would be the most appropriate, my next question then is which one - factoring in costs into it this time.

Rockrider 5.2 (2012) - £245 inc delivery.

Giant Revel 3 (2012) - £200 inc delivery.

Carrera Valour (11/12) - £250 pickup local.

Diamondback Overdrive (2012) - £215 inc delivery.

These are the best one's I could find based on reviews and reading through the forums. But of course any other's that you guys would recommend I'd certainly be listening? I don't really want to stretch my budget much further because in all honesty I may ride it 5 times then very a little again (hopefully not) - see how the motivation holds up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm located in Arbroath, Scotland
Thanks,
Kyle

  • might be an idea to put your location on, it's not unknown for people to have bikes to sell that aren't up for sale
pity those who don't drink, the way they feel when they wake is the best they will feel all day

The best bike there is the Rockrider - nice 8 speed drivetrain, alloy components, decent wheels and sub 30lbs weight.

My first MTB was a rockrider 8.10 with Cycletowork scheme works out around £250ish
  • Hello,

I was thinking the Rock Rider would get the vote from looking at previous threads etc. Just wondered if any of the others would have changed opinion as the prices seem to be down on some of them - £200 for a giant bike seemed cheap to me.

Think I'll crack on and get one ordered....now the task of trying to be half decent on a bike again :D

On that note, how does the cycle to work scheme...work? I had a look at it but was a little lost. The initiative isn't in use at the minute in my work. Does it cost my work anything to do so? Also could I buy a bike from a website or does it have to be solely in store as there isn't a Decathlon anywhere close to where I live.

    Thanks for the help everyone.
