What wheels can I buy ? To suit my set up Carbon!
I'm a bit naive around wheels to free hubs etc. I currently have a campagnolo cassette etc on my bike if I was to buy some new or 2nd hand wheels my question is can I only buy wheels that have a campag free hub (whatever that means) or are they interchangeable ?
Also if I was to buy some mavic cosmics what benefit would I get from them. My current wheels weigh 15-1600g and would you leave them on your bike all the time (apart from winter etc)

Yes, preference would beto go for a wheel with a Campagnolo freehub - you can get a Campagnolo-spaced cassette for a Shimano freehub (10 speed) but they don't work as smoothly as the Campagnolo cassettes.
There are countless 'what wheel' threads on this forum and suggest you search these for more info.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
Hi there
Just a bit puzzled by your post stating that you are running a Campag cassette - whereas both your bikes listed are Treks. To my knowledge Treks are normally supplied with Shimano groupsets.
Generally speaking a Campag cassette would not be particularly compatible with Shimano shifters and derailleurs - maybe you could clarify what spec your bike has.
To return to your basic question the answer is yes - if you are running a Campag cassette then you need to buy wheels that have a Campag specific freehub fitted. Overall the freehub is the system of bearings, ratchets and pawls that allow your rear wheel to spin freely when you stop pedalling.

As part of that freehub system, the freehub body is designed to secure the cassette in place with a series of splines and a locking ring. Campag cassettes have a different spline pattern to Shimano and SRAM cassettes - hence the need to make sure that you order the right freehub on your new wheels.0 -
The previous owner didn't like the shimano shifting so put campag shifters & rear mech on. To be honest after trying most set ups I quite like it.My bikes

Most brands of wheels can be retrofitted with a freehub for either Shimano/Sram or Campagnolo. They generally cost between £20 and £120. Most just require a couple of allen keys to fit and some are tool less fitment. This way you can use genuine cassettes. However some brands only fit Shimano/Sram (such as Shimano or Sram branded wheels) and some only fit Campagnolo (Wheels made by Campagnolo but excluding Fulcrum wheels which can be bought and or converted between Shimano/Sram and Campagnolo).
As for what wheels are suitable, it depends upon your weight, riding style, will you be racing, budget, mechanical know how ect...... Leave a few more details and people will be able to better recommend.
Which model Cosmics are you referring to?
Hope this helps.0
