RIP Burry Stander

Hi all

Sad day for MTB'ing world wide.

Been confirmed, Burry Stander was killed in a hit and run while out riding with his father just over a hour ago.

Thoughts are with his wife Cherise and the Stander family.

    WHAT? A very sad loss to the MTB and cycling communities of someone far too young and passionate about the sport. As you say, thoughts and condolences to the family.

    A sad loss to the sport indeed... and it highlights the hazards that cyclists in South Africa face when riding on public roads, Many cyclists are killed in S.A. every year. There needs to be an awareness campaign to prevent this senseless loss of life.

    we need government to stand behind us, not a 2 week campaign, but a concerted effort, make an example of people, throw the book a them, lock them up so that they forget what the sun looks like, show people/drivers that this is not a just a ahh well and walk away from it. when will this be stopped... :( The Epic will not be the Epic this year with out Burry there.

    An update,

    more accurate information, was not a hit and run, the driver that hit Burry did stop, has been taken into custody and charged with culpable homicide.

    Horrible Horrible news. I always enjoyed watching him ride, he rode like a demon at the Olympics and deserved a podium place.

    A real loss. He was a nice guy, chatted to him a couple of times when he was over here riding the NPS in 2007.
