Shimano wheel service problems

In the last 6 months both my rear wheels have had the same problem both following my servicing and I think I must be doing something wrong. The wheels in question are shimano RS10 and RS80 so they are almost identical.
I am getting water ingress into the drive side of the rear hub which is discolouring and pitting the cup and cone and balls. The non drive is perfect as is the front wheel. I also use shimano grease (the green stuff).
My current idea is that when I clean the rear cassette and chain on the wheel with de-greaser it is finding its way down into the bearings. Possible? or any thing I am missing during re-build?

If you're dousing the area with solvent then you could easily be stripping the grease out of the hub. I've done it myself as a teenager with petrol and an old freewheel bike; most disconcerting when the freewheel won't re-engage!

Check the seals on the cone and the ribs on the axle for damage too; if the labyrinth seal has a notch in it then it will stop working.
