Hi
I have a Shimano standard double (53x39). I use an 11-25 here in the UK which is fine. However, next summer I am off to the Alps. Can I put a 28 block on the back? if not, what would be the largest cassette I could use?

  • if its a shimano rear mech then a 28 works fine dispite what the tech doc says about 27tooth max, just need to play with the b screw

Simano cranks allow you to fit a 38 tooth on the front, if you wish. It's not much, but when in the mountains I've found that having ENOUGH in the low gear range is very handy and one less tooth up front is just that much better when the going really gets steep.

I've got a standard double plus an 11/28 at the back - works fine.

I have no idea what's going on here.

it has little to do with the cranks but what the mech can manage as the largest cog on the cassette.

change the rear mech to one that can manage a 32 or 34 cog then the world is your oyster.

  • When i done the Marmotte this year i was able to get a 12/30 rear cassette to work with a compact chainset and a standard length Ultegra rear deraileur.
