I'm in the process of building my first road bike. Just wondered what sort of cassette size is best, I've seen that the big cog goes from about 22 teeth up to 29. I live in n Wales where tere are a few hills. I'll be running 2 ring up front.

Cheers

Dependent on your fitness and where you want to use the bike. 11-25 is fine for UK but if your just starting you ,ight struggle on step hills. 11-28 gets you up anything and is probably the most common fit, I would go start here.
  • Depends what you want to do - grind or spin up the hills .....

Grind 11-25 lower top but small spaces between gears - everyone makes them ...
Spin 11-32 SRAM with long cage rear deraileur you can get in Apex, Force, Rival or Red (ascending order of price)
or Shimano 30t I think is the tops available in Tiagra but not sure if other Shimano series do that range
  • Ive got a 50-34 up front and a 12-28 at the back (shimano tiagra) havent found anything i couldnt get up yet :)

Been MTB-ing for a while so not new to cycling. I've already got a Ultegra 6500 9 SPd rear mech with a short cage, so been told I can go up to 29
