Always resisted buying one due to the boredom of using same, but some of these days are just too cold and I suppose a 1hr good hard workout on a trainer in my garage is better than nowt. Must be cheap but do the job....any suggestions ?

Have a look on Amazon for the cycleops range. The wind one is around 100 on there and they've also got some of the Fluid 2 as warehouse seconds (still with warranty for about 1600

Got one of these recently, for exactly the same reasons as you http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cycleops-classic-mag-turbo-trainer/
Easy to set up and use, and bonus that it came with a reasonable DVD which is good for motivationShare The Road Event http://www.sharetheroadride.co.uk
