When to buy new chainset/chain

It is advised (but not always necessary) that you change the rear cassette when you change the chain as this gives optimum performance (and minimises the likelhood of any wear issues) but the front chainset, no not if there is no visible wear to the teeth.
If your cassette has done 5k I would personally change it with the chain to remove the possibilty of slipping chain/gears.
The front chainset should see off 4 or 5 chains at least.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
Use a chain checker tool like this:

It will tell you how worn your chain is.1998 Kona Cindercone in singlespeed commute spec

For me, on a well maintained drivetrain you'll get 3 chains to one cassette, gods knows about chainrings because i've always changed the chainset by then. 3K+ miles on a chain shouldn't be a problem but some folk seem to swap them every other month but use a metal rule to check for stretch.0

Chainrings are good for for at least 15000miles normally. I have seen though cheaper Truative chainrings being very worn after 5000 miles from new on one chain. Most chainrings last a lot longer though.
After 5000 miles it is a certainty that your chain and cassette are worn. If you have a cheaper drive train it is cost effective to leave them for as long as you have.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0
