Anyone got experience of Campag ultra-torque and BB30

I'm buying a new cannondale frame that is BB30 and I want to stay compatible with all of my 11 speed Campag stuff on my other bikes so that I can swap cassettes and wheels etc.

I know there are some Campag press fit BB30 adapters but they don't get good reviews on Wiggle and the like so I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience of these or has anybody got any bright ideas regarding another solution.

As I'm running 11 speed I'm thinking that using a SRAM BB30 chainset might not be too clever.

Any ideas or comments?

Thanks.

There is a problem with Campags Press fit30 adapters. These sleveves are too short resulting in play when riding. The whole point of BB30 is too save weight and a stiffer BB shell. You are not saving the weight is you use a 24mm spoindle crank with adapters. There are fewer repoted issues with the BB30 adapters. Wheel manufacturing do BB30 apaters too.

Change the cranks to a proper BB30 one and get the weight saving BB30 is supposed to give you.

  • Thanks for the reply and advice.

Sorry to pose another question immediately, I hope you don't mind.

If I buy a new BB30 chainset I am worried about compatibility with my existing Campag 11 speed chain so do you think the wheel manufacturing versions of the adapter are better than the Campag BB30 one. Their website is nice and informative I have to say.

    Another alternative I've seen is the C-Bear bearings. http://www.c-bear.com/en/bb-en/bb30-cam ... racket.php

They have a good reputation too.

I've seen quite a few BB30 frames that use FSA BB30 chainsets with 11-speed Campag groups. Not sure of the specific chainsets though.

The new VacanSoliel Bianchi team bike uses an FSA chainset with Campag gears.

I don't know about Campag, but the BMC has a BB30 shell and I used the FSA adapter for a HTII BB . I used a loctite retaining compound (6xx) when it was installed. There was some creaking early on, but that went away over time.

It is a permanent installation though so if there'sa problem, you're stuck with it!
  • Thank you everyone. I'm not convinced that I'm doing the right thing with the Campag so I might just bite the bullet and switch to SRAM for it.

Campag 11 speed chains will runs fine over an 10 speed chainrings. As I like campag and now have developing like for shimano road groups and I like to keep everything from one manufacturer I will not be using BB30 at all as neither make BB30 cranks yet.

to many issues with BB30's creaking for my likeing as well. Loctite is a common solution and the are compounds that are semi perement so the bearing can be removed. however Loctite is solution to a problem that means the shell and bearing dimension are not compatioble. either one or both are out of tolerance. Every time I see a BB30 it is to sort out bloody creaking.

I think the Sram cranksets with BB30 are a decent choice.

Loctite 641 is a semi-permanent adhesive, aka bearing-fit and designed exactly for this job. It's standard practise for many components in industry. The problem is that BB30 requires a manufacturing tolerance that's expensive to produce in volume - it wasn't designed for large scale manufacture.

The problem is not with the loctite, it with the tight clearance between the adapter and the bottom bracket shell. FSA warn in their instructions that the BB shell can be permanently enlarged by the adapter resulting in a loose fit if a BB30 chainset is used.

That is why I would never recomend a BB30 frame with a 24mm axled crankset. BB30 is meant for BB30 cranks. No point otherwise.

There's no logic in the argument that a BB30 crank is better than a 24mm spindle in a BB30 frame except if the parts are installed incorrectly. The problem is that many frame manufacturers cannot maintain the high tolerances needed for press fit bearings.
