I know very little about bikes so would be very grateful if anyone could help. My son had a cycling accident recently and broke his arm. He would like to get his old Raleigh (?late 80s) repaired as he loves riding it. The crank set needs replacing. It is marked as Shimano Exage Biopace FC-A300 (52/40; 170 crank arm length). We are trying to get as near to the original part as possible and there is one on ebay I think will do but it is "FC-A250". I'm guessing that is just a variant of the part he has damaged but could anyone confirm/refute this? This bike part stuff is interesting but I am way out of my depth!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me :)

I think I might have such a crank in the garage. I came from my old Raleigh 1989.

I'll try to find it tomorrow.

My came from this bike "Vitesse" 1990-Raleigh-Catalogue-10-11.jpg

Have a look at the spec and pic to see if it is what you are looking for.

Thanks, I think his may be an earlier model (possibly Raleigh Elan?) but I will consult with those who know more than I do about this! I don't really know how interchangeable these things are but I do appreciate your replies and will try and work out what's what.

why do you want to replace like with like?

many cranks will fit. you just need to check the BB axle length first.

but if that also need replacing then the world is your oyster.

They are compatible, Shimano Exage Biospace use a squaretape BB. I thought you wanted to maintain the original bike as much as possible, hence my offer to find my crankset. You can always get the one on ebay and you'll be fine with that too.
