When should a wheel be trued? And my tyre has a rip?

Ok so...

Both the front and rear wheels on my bike are very slightly out of true. Like, a minimal amount. But because I'm relatively new to having a nice bike, I don't know whether it's a problem yet?

Should wheels run true ALL the time or does it matter if it goes slightly?

Also, I ripped my tyre today. I didn't get a puncture and it's pretty small...is this also a problem?

Thanks
Luke

If you can see the inner tube then it is something to worry about, but if it's literally a nick then I personally would not worry, there is so much glass on the road you'd be changing your tyres every ride if you changed them for every nick.

Tolerance for wheel trueness I would suggest should be around 2mm deviance from true, maximum.

I guess it all depends on your point of view. You can probably get away with a few mm of runout but I'm proper OCD about these things and I like my wheels to be as true as possible so there's no visible deviation on my wheels.
  • Nice one thanks guys :)

A wheel out of true is not a problem, but it is the first symptom of problems to come. 99% of the times there is poor tension in some spokes

  • Thanks.

I'll get them trued in the new year I think. They're not bad, so shouldn't be a problem until then.
  • If you are worried about a small gash in the tyre then fill this in with superglue.
  • Never thought of that, great idea thanks.
