Sapim CX Ray spokes?

Im thinking of having some 32 spoke wheels built using Record hubs, Ambrosio rims and black DT comp spokes. Is it worth paying an extra £100 for CX Rays? Ideally I would like to keep the weight below 1500 g and this may be the only way to do it.

Sapim Laser weigh the same as cx rays, but they're not bladed. They cost about half as much.
    More problems but still living....
  • No, it is not worth it.
What I would do is to use DT revolution at the front... they are nearly as light as the CX ray. I would howver stick to the DT comp at the rear.
Ambrosio rims (Excellight?) are not the stiffest rims and do benefit from substancial spoking. CX ray have been designed to be used with very stiff rims, like deep section or wide section. If you want the CX ray, I suggest you get the hubs built on Archetype rims... but then you gain weight there, as those are about 30 grams heavier than the Excellight

Had to get my Zipps re-spoked and couldn't believe the price of the things  shop in Germany are getting them for me as they work out cheaper. Whilst really strong spokes (being re-spoked due to them seezing in the nipples  ) they don't warant the price....if it were any other wheel I'd go with DT ! ....oh and that I need straight and not "J" bend

Just got these exact wheels built up by Harry Rowland - Record 32H hubs, Excellight rims and Sapim spokes - laser on front, race on back. CX-Ray are not worth it for this kind of wheel. Harry charges an extra £10 for lasers on the front compared to race all round (£80 vs £90 in my case IIRC).

I have Excellight rims on Novatech hubs with DT competition spokes front and rear.

I went for silver spokes though as the black ones are not as hardy.

Very nice ride they are too.

My favourite wheels to date are record/DT comp/aerohead. They are wonderfully smooth and forgiving. Ive had them a few years now and use them year round without a problem. I have just had a pair of the archetype rims (suggested by Ugo) built with cx rays, but not had an opportunity to ride them yet. They came in at 1650g with CK hubs, so not especially light.
