Genuine campagnolo gear cable compatibility

Can anyone provide a definitive answer please.

3 types of ergo outer cables exist I think, original ones I think for 8 speed only had "Campagnolo" written in italic style writing,then there was i think 9 and 10 speed with "CAMPAGNOLO" on the outside and now there is "CAMPAGNOLO ULTRA LOW FRICTION", 10 and 11 speed I think.

Can this newer type which has a 4mm outer casing be used with older 9 and 10 speed ergo levers, i.e. , "Ultra QS" and pre "Ultra QS" such as "Carbon BB System" ergo levers and if so is a ferrule needed or recommended inside the ergo housing that is designed for a wider gear cable outer. Obviously the new inners must be used with the new outers.

The outer casing diameter for the gear shift is different on e.g. Ergo Escape @ 4.5mm vs Ultrashift and Powershift @ 4.1mm. Doesn't deal with 8sp or 9sp but does confirm that there have been differences in their cables over the years.

As far as I know, you can't use the new ultra/power shift cables on the older ergos. The modern levers don't use ferrules where the outers enter the body (the ferrule is effectively built in) and they're narrower. For them to work, you'd need to find ferrules that were as wide as the older ferrules but with a narrower inside.

They work fine in my experience. You just have to reuse or buy some ferrules to go on the shifter end of the cable housing.

i have now used the new ultra low friction cables on both campag 8 speed and 9 speed systems and the shifting is vastly improved. Obviously it might have improved simply because it has new inners and outers even if it hadn't been ultra low friction cables. £24 a set so no major expense.

Interestingly, on both systems the LBS installed cables that have been in for years had no ferrules at the ergo end so I didn't use any when I replaced them. However, I do make sure I use the factory cut end at the ergo end and I grease the inners as well. The shifting really is very slick. I make sure the outers go all the way into the ergo housing and I tape the housing to the bars very tightly with pvc tape to ensure no movement. My thinking was that the ferrule is a possible source of friction where the inner cable enters it.

If I remember correctly on my 10 speed build which I did myself with the "CAMPAGNOLO" cables I think I did follow advice to use ferrules at the ergo end. That is next to be replaced.
